Chapter 4.

10:30 pm. Natalie filled her car with gas and washed off the windshield. She pulled the car up to the gas station door and waited for Avery. She put a CD in the stereo. Avery came out with a bag full of gummy bears and Mountain Dew. “The trip has officially started.” She said buckling her seat belt.

“Not quite.” Natalie said.

She pulled out of the gas station and onto the freeway. She hit play on the CD player, and those 3 familiar notes chimed the start of the song “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)” A chill ran through the girls. “Now the trip has officially started.” Natalie said smiling. Natalie and Avery screamed out the windows, “Quit playing games with my heart!” along with the song.

The singing died down as the girls started to get tired. After a while Natalie saw a sign that said to Columbus left lane and Cincinnati right lane. Natalie thought for a moment and switched into the right lane. Avery looked up confused and reached for the map. “Weren’t we supposed to go left?” She asked trying to find their place on the map.

“Yes.” Natalie said grinning. “But if we take 75 instead of 77 down, we go through Lexington, Kentucky. I thought we could stay there for the night.”

Avery smiled and the girls headed for Kentucky. They stayed the night and spent the next morning exploring the quaint little town. They kept saying things like, “I wonder if Brian ever sat her”, or “Do you think he ever shopped in there.” They eventually came across the only Long John Sliver’s Restaurant in town. The girls looked at each other and laughed. They had to eat lunch there. They both ordered hushpuppies and were having a blast. It seemed like they left all their troubles in Michigan. “We are going to have so much fun this week.” Natalie said.

“That’s right.” Avery agreed, “But, absolutely no boy drama this trip!”

The rest of the drive seemed to fly by even though they had to stop like every hour because of the obscene amounts of Mountain Dew they had been drinking. When they reached the Florida state line, they blasted Backstreet Boys the rest of the way. They were completely exhausted and were running purely on a mixture of caffeine and adrenaline by the time they had reached the resort.

The resort had a huge lodge for checking in, events, dining, swimming, and other various activities. The rooms were all separate. Designed like little tikki huts spread out down the beach. When the girls went in the lodge they began to notice that the place was empty. Avery looked around and frowned. “This is Florida, where are all the hot guys?”
“Where are all the people?” Natalie asked in reply. “Besides, I thought you said no boy drama this trip.” She added walking up to the front desk.

Avery smiled wickedly, “I said no boy DRAMA. That doesn’t include a meaningless vacation fling with some totally hot Florida boy.”

“Not me.” Natalie said, “I’ve had enough action this week to last a lifetime!”

Avery looked at Natalie surprised. “He did kiss you! I knew it!”

Natalie ignored the comment. “ I mean it,” she continued, “If I have to so much as meet a single guy this trip, I’m pretty sure my brain will explode!”

An older man standing behind the front desk, coughed suggestively to let the girls know he was there. He had a big smile on his face and was trying not to laugh. “You ladies checking in?” he asked.

Natalie blushed, “She’s had a rough week.” Avery said to the man.

“Well,” the man said, “That week is over. Let’s start this week off on a better note, shall we? I have upgraded you ladies to our presidential suite. It’s the biggest and the nicest one we have.”

“Thank you.” Natalie said surprised, “But you didn’t have to do that.”

The man looked at the girls and smiled. “But we’ll take it.” Avery said.

“How come you did that?” Natalie asked, “If you don’t mind my asking.”

“Well we sold out this week. Had to move some people around, and I remembered talking to a really sweet girl from Michigan who was having a problem with her boyfriend if I recall. Thought she could use a really nice vacation.”

“That was you?” Natalie asked a little surprised.

“Yes ma’am.” The man said with a wink, “The name’s Jerry. I own this place, and you must be Natalie.”

Natalie blushed and nodded her head. Avery gave her a weird look. She shrugged. “How are you doing dear? Still single form the sound of it.”

Natalie blushed again. “Both of us actually.” She said.

“I see.” Jerry said. “Well, welcome to my little piece of heaven. You ladies enjoy yourselves and if there is anything I can do for you, just let me know.”

“Thanks.” Natalie said again.

The girls got their room keys and headed for their cabin. “It does look like a tikki hut.” Avery said when they got to their room.”

“It’s the biggest tikki hut I’ve ever seen.” Natalie said opening the door.

“It’s the only tikki hut you’ve ever seen.” Avery said laughing.

The girls stood in the doorway absolutely amazed at the sight. It was the nicest place either of them had ever seen. There were two bedrooms, each with their own master bath. There was a huge living room with a grand fireplace and a wall-to-wall entertainment system with a sound system that played in every room, including the back patio where they had their own private hot tub. The girls felt like they had stepped into some crazy episode of lifestyles of the rich and famous. “This place is crazy!” Avery said.

“Let’s test the surround.” Natalie said throwing BSB into the CD player.

The girls ran around the place dancing while BSB played in every room. Eventually the girls settled down and went to sleep. They were feeling great the next morning. “Let’s go to the beach.” Avery said, “I want to see hot beach boys.”

The girls grabbed their towels, sunscreen, gummy bears and Mountain Dew, and they were off to the beach. When they got there, they were the only ones on the beach. “Where are the hot boys?” Avery said.

“It is only 9 in the morning.” Natalie pointed out.

Natalie looked at the water. “It’s so pretty, so clean.”

“Not exactly lake Erie, is it?” Avery laughed.

Natalie and Avery spread their towels. Avery flipped through a magazine and Natalie attempted to paint her toenails without getting sand on them. Just then two guys walked down to the beach and decided they would say hi. The girls didn’t notice they were there. The two boys walked up behind Natalie and Avery right as Avery said, “I know this is supposed to be a no boy drama week, but I have to know. Did Paul kiss you the other night?”

Intrigued by the question, the boys stood their quietly listening to the conversation. Natalie sighed. “Yup.” She said.

“Oh my heck!” Avery exclaimed waiting for more details.
Brian and Nick looked at each other wondering if they should interrupt. Natalie went on. “He told me how much he was in love with Emily and that he didn’t want to hurt her but he was still in love with me.”

“Oh! What a jerk! And you let him kiss you!”

“I didn’t let him, he just did it. I was shocked. I didn’t even have time to react.”
“Wait, he said he was in love with you!”

“Yeah, who knew?” Natalie said bitterly. “Anyway his exact words were ‘Just one kiss so I don’t have to spend the rest of my life wondering.’”

Nick and Brian exchanged glances. “What did you say?” Avery asked.

“Nothing! What could I say? I just left.”

“What is it with guys?” Avery said. “I mean he kisses you when he’s getting married in like 3 days, not that Emily doesn’t deserve it.”

Natalie shook her head. “All boys cheat.” She said convinced it was the truth.
One of the boys let out a tiny little laugh, startling the girls. “Sorry, did you just say all boys cheat?” he asked when they realized he was there.

Twice now, someone had butted in on her most intimate conversations. Natalie was so angry that she snapped before even looking at who was standing there. “What is it with people listening to private conversations?”

The boys stood there shocked. Avery stared in disbelief. “Um Natalie?” she said.

“Yes, I said boys cheat! And apparently they eavesdrop! Do you mind!” Natalie continued.

“Natalie?” Avery said again.

“What!” She said to Avery feeling a little better.

“I’m sorry.” She said finally turning around. “I didn’t mean it, I’m just-“ She stopped when she saw whom she was yelling at.

“Having a bad week?” One of the boys asked.

Natalie and Avery looked at each other, wasn’t that exactly what they said to Jerry the night before? “No,” the guy continued, “We’re sorry. That was rude of us to listen in like that.”

“Still I shouldn’t have yelled.” Natalie said.

“Hi, I’m Nick.” One of the boys said and held out his hand. Avery’s hand trembled as she shook it. “And this is Brian.”

“Hi.” Avery finally said.

The boys didn’t know it, but they didn’t need an introduction. The girls knew exactly who they were from the instant they saw them. They were Nick Carter and Brian Littrell, lead singers of their favorite group, the Backstreet Boys. Natalie and Avery were in shock.

Brian sat down next to Natalie and held out his hand. “Forgive me?” he said.

Natalie’s anger had been long gone, but the embarrassment only continued to get worse. “No, really, forgive me.” She said. “I don’t usually…”

“Alright then, we forgive each other.” Brian laughed and flashed her a beautiful smile.

“So,” Nick said. “Do you two beautiful girls have names?”

“Avery.”

“Natalie.”

“Nice to meet you.” Brian said.

Just then a voice yelled from off in the distance. “B-Rok! Nicky!”

The boys scrambled to their feet. “Are we late?” Nick asked.

“Must be.” Brian said. “I’m sorry but we have to go. Believe me when I say, it’s been a pleasure.” Brian smiled at Natalie and she forced a smile blushing again.

“BRIAN! NICK!” the voice yelled again.

“We’ve really got to go. I’m sure we’ll see you around again.” Nick said.

The boys took off in the direction of the voice. Nick turned around and said, “For the record, I’ve never cheated.”

"You've never had a girlfriend to cheat on." Brian laughed.

Nick quickly elbowed his friend and tried not to blush. Natalie wanted to die from embarrassment. Natalie and Avery waved goodbye to the guys and they disappeared as quickly as they had appeared. When they were completely out of sight, Natalie and Avery freaked out! Had that really just happened? They couldn’t believe it! It had to be a dream. They kept waiting to wake up, but they never did. It wasn’t a dream after all. They ran back to their cabin. Once they were inside they freaked out again. “Can you believe it? That was NICK CARTER!” Avery said all giddy.

She looked at her hand. “He touched me.” She said and kissed her hand. “I’ll never wash it again.”

Natalie plopped down on to a really big chair. “Whoa, this chair is almost like a couch.” She said, “We must have looked so stupid. I can’t believe I yelled at Brian! He hates me now, I know it.”

“Come on it wasn’t that bad.” Avery said trying to stay positive.

“All boys cheat?” Natalie said repeating the conversation in her head. “They must think we are total idiots.”

A worried look replaced Avery’s smile for a brief moment. Then she shook her head and said, “Whatever, we just met Backstreet Boys!” The girls laughed and all the sudden they were giddy again.
