Against All Odds - Chapter Nineteen

“Brian, would you just calm down?” Nick hissed as he clamped his hand ontop of Brian’s as
he kept drumming them ontop of the bar counter.

“Sorry, I...I just don’t really like being in here,” Brian stated as he nervously looked into
the mirror behind the bar.

“Yeah.. I know, den of evil, so you’re evil for one night, god, just quit your worrying about
it, you’re drinking soda for crying out loud!”

Brian leaned closer to Nick. “Yeah, but I’m sitting at the bar counter, this just isn’t right
for me.”

“Then go to confession in the mor---”

“That’s Catholic!” Brian interrupted.

“Oh, yeah, my bad.”

“Guys, he’s walking in!” Jake announced as he walked past Nick and Brian.

“Good, I’ll have another Heiniken,” Nick called out.

“Coke... he’ll have a coke,” Brian corrected.

“With some Seagrams,” Nick interceded.

“NO, with ice,” Brian replied with a toothy smile.

“You are definitely off my list of ‘fun people to take to a club’,” Nick mumbled.

Brian shifted on the bar stool, pulling at his turtleneck sweater. “That’s because, my
friend, you need to keep your faculties intact.”

“I can handle this, I’ve only had one beer for crying out loud,” Nick defended. “God, that
guy is kinda creepy looking,” Nick observed as he saw a man take a seat at the end of the
bar.

Jake set the coke in front of Nick. He gestured with a nod of his head. “That is the man
you’ve been waiting to talk to.”

“I knew he was creepy looking for a reason!” Nick breathed.

Brian threw Nick a dirty look and then focused his attention to Jake. “So you don’t know
his name?”

Jake shook his head. “Nope, never caught his name, just know he’s a regular.”

After Jake walked away, Nick sighed. “Great, so now what do we do? Walk up to this man
and say, ‘Hi, we’re friends of AJ McLean, he’s dead and we think you have something to do
with it.’ Yeah Brian, this is not going to be as easy as it looks.”

“Shut up for a minute, I’m thinking!” Brian snapped.

Nick’s eyes grew wide. “Whoa, bite my head off!”

Brian rubbed his temples. Nick knew by that sign it was time to shut up and start drinking
his coke....plain coke with ice.
