AGAINST ALL ODDS - Chapter Five

The humming of the florescent lights in the small office room almost took on a rhymithic
beat in Nick’s head as the men sat and waited for the detective to return. No one uttered
a word while they waited. Kevin kept his pacing while they waited.

Suddenly, the door creaked open and a man that looked like he should have retired years
ago, entered the office.

"I’m Detective Phil Schneider," the man stated crisply as he offered his hand to Kevin.

They waited until the man sat down at the table, laying a thin folder down.

"Have you found anything?" Howie blurted.

"Let me ask the questions first, please," the man replied.

They all quietly waited as he pulled out a legal pad and clicked his pen several times.
"Alright, I just need some information about the victim. What’s his full name?"

"WE ALREADY GAVE----"

Nick quieted down when Kevin grabbed his arm and shook his head. "It’s Alexander James
McLean."

"Oh, wait, here it is, we’ve already gotten his vital stats," the detected stated with a grin
that wasn’t returned by anyone in the room except for Brian, but that was a thin smile if it
could even be called a smile.

"Okay, this is what we have so far, we ran the VIN numbers on the BMW that was pulled
from the water and it was registered to Alexander James McLean. There weren’t any
occupants inside the vehicle, as I’m sure you already knew since you were standing on the
edge of the water. We will have to assume he’s still in the water and because of the time
situation, we are not going to be able to look for a body or bodies until tomorrow morning
at six a.m."

Nick narrowed his eyes at the detective. "That’s it? You’re assuming he’s dead?"

"Based on where he went off the road and his car going off the bridge into the water 50
feet below, I really don’t believe anyone could survive the impact of the water. In my
career of over 50 years of being a detective in this county, I have never seen anyone
survive a crash like that."

Nick stood up and slammed his chair into the table. "I’m not giving up! He’s alive! I will find
him if I have to look for him myself!"

"You can’t interfere, we have licensed and trained divers that will comb the water
tomorrow. If there’s a body to be found, we will find it," Detective Schneider replied
briskly, his temper starting to flare.

Everyone was quiet as they watched Nick storm out of the room. Brian quietly stood up and
pushed his chair in. "I’ll go after him," he stated quietly.
