Nick kissed Stacie on the lips and smiled as he walked out of the room. He meant it and more than ever at this time. He wanted to say it for a while now but needed the perfect time; and what better time but during a crisis? He leaned against the door and tilted his head back.

“That sigh does not sound of relief,” Brian’s voice broke Nick from his thoughts.

“Hey,” Nick stood up. “Coffee?”

“I’ll buy,” Brian agreed and they went to the vending machine. “Is she doing the transfusion right now?”

“Yeah, it’s going to be about an hour or more.”

“What else did he say?”

“He seemed to have high hopes, but in this profession I guess you have to. But he did mention there is a small, very small chance it could be leukemia.”

“My God,” Brian closed his eyes and said a silent prayer. “I’m sorry Nick.”

“We won’t know until tomorrow. He said small, and she’s been too healthy to show it, but I guess with the medication she’s been on, it could’ve been hiding the effects and it’s just getting worse now.”

“She has been a lot weaker.”

“I told her I loved her.”

“Really?” Brian handed Nick a steaming cup of black coffee and Nick nodded. “Good for you Nick. What did she say?”

“I played with it; I just smiled and walked out of the room.”

“Nice Nick,” Brian laughed.

“I told her I’d find you and bring you in. She’s scared right now.”

“How are you doing?”

“I’m fine; I mean I have to be her rock right now.”

“I can be yours man,” he put a hand on Nick’s shoulder. They went back into Stacie’s room where she was eating toast with jam and drinking a juice box.

“Hey beautiful,” Brian came in kissing the top of her head.

“Nick told you huh?” she laughed.

“Yeah but you’re still beautiful.”

“Are you feeling better?” Nick asked.

“A little, not really. I’m trying to eat but I’m not hungry.”

~*~*~*~Two hours later~*~*~*

“Make sure she just keeps eating and drinking fluids, no caffeine, for the rest of the day. Sleep will help too,” the nurse told Nick wheeling in a chair. “Alright dear, you ready to go?”

“Yeah,” she held her head in her hand. “Nick?” she called his name closing her eyes as she sat up.

“I’m right here baby.”

“I’m so dizzy.” Nick helped the nurse get Stacie into the wheel chair and he brought her out to the parking lot where Brian was waiting with the car. The nurse held the wheel chair and Nick picked her up and set her in the back seat.

“Thank you,” he said politely to the nurse and she smiled and went back into the hospital.

“Ugh, I don’t think I can do this three hour ride back home,” Stacie was lying on her side in a ball.

“We hung around an extra forty-five minutes baby; the doctor said you’ll feel better tomorrow.”

“Stace, I’ll get you home soon. Just try to sleep.” Brian said sweetly as he started the car and pulled out of the parking lot. Nick sat up front with him, but was turned to face Stacie in the back. Within a half hour of the drive she was passed out.

*~*~*~ Three Hours Later*~*~*

“Come on you, we’re home.” Nick gently shook Stacie awake. She opened her eyes and started sitting up. “Slowly,” Nick warned helping her. She put her hands on his shoulders and scooted out of the back seat. Nick helped her stand up in the drive way. “You doing alright?”

“I’ll get your door,” Brian told Nick taking the keys and unlocking the front door.

“Nick I can’t,” Stacie wrapped her arms around his neck

“I’ve got you,” he picked her up and brought her into the house and straight for his room. He gently laid her on the bed and took her shoes off. He laid a light blanket on top of her and told her he’d be right back.

“Can I do anything else?” Brian asked as Nick went up to him.

“I think we’re all set. Thanks for today Bri.”

“I’m glad I was there,” he pulled Nick in for a hug. “Call me as soon as you know tomorrow or if you need anything tonight?”

“Of course.”

“Goodnight.”

“Night,” Nick walked Brian out and went into the kitchen. He made some eggs and brought juice in for Stacie. She was holding onto the dresser when he walked in.

“What are you doing?”

“I had to pee, is that okay?” she laughed lightly. “I don’t think I’m going to make it though, and may have an accident on your floor.”

“Let’s not have that,” Nick laughed setting the food down and helping her to the bathroom.

“This is embarrassing.”

“I’ll be right here when you’re done.” She closed the door and few minutes later it opened. “Feel better?”

“No.”

“Let’s get some food in you. I made scrambled eggs, your favorite.”

“What? Pancakes are my favorite.”

“Well, I didn’t think you’d be able to handle those right now. Tomorrow.”

“Very true.” Nick helped her back to the bed. She sat down and he lifted her legs up and handed her the plate. She pushed the food around with her fork and took small bites. “Aren’t you hungry?” she asked taking a sip of her juice.

“Brian and I had Wendy’s about an hour ago. You were out.”

“Good thing. My whole body is just shaky. I can’t imagine doing this again.”

“Everything will be fine.” Nick smiled sitting next to her.

“Nick, what if things aren’t fine. What if I do have…” her voice trailed off and she looked down at her eggs.

“Then we will deal with it, together. Get the best treatment and fight it. I’m not leaving your side.”

“You meant it earlier?”

“What do you think?”

“I think, I know, yes. I love you Nick.”

“I know.” He pulled her in for a hug and held her.

“Nick?”

“Stace?”

“I’m scared.”

“It’s okay to be baby, its okay.”
~*~*~*~
“Anastasia your phone, it’s ringing,” Nick shook her sleeping shoulders.

“Hmm?” she rolled over facing Nick.

“Your phone,” Nick handed her the phone. She took it, flipped it open and put it to her ear.

“Yeah?” she asked sleepily.

“Hi Anastasia this is Dr. Green.” At the name Stacie sat up and was more alert.

“Oh, hi Dr. Green. How are you?...Feeling better, yes thank you…it’s alright. Oh?” Stacie now stood up out of bed and walked towards the window. Nick was sitting up watching her intently trying to figure out what the doctor was saying. “I understand…yes that’s the one. Thank you…you too…goodbye.” She hung up the phone and continued to look out the window. Nick was now behind her with his hand on her shoulder.

“Baby?” he whispered.

“I’m fine,” she turned around and smiled at Nick.

“No leukemia?”

“No but I am anemic. The medication they had me on gave me diabetic like symptoms but he called in a prescription for a different kind of medication that should help with everything.”

“Thank God,” Nick pulled her into his arms holding her tight. He kissed the top of her head, her cheek and then her lips.

“Nick…can’t…breathe…”Stacie choked out with a light laugh. As Nick pulled away she caught a tear roll down his cheek. “Oh, Nicky. It’s going to be alright, I’m going to be alright.”

“I know, I just was so scared Stace,” his voice quivered and as he shut his eyes tight more tears came out. Stacie pulled him to her this time trying to calm him down. She pulled him to the bed, still holding his hands and looked at him. “Just the thought of losing you, kills me. I’ve never felt this way about someone so fast and so strong before.”

“I was scared too because I finally feel complete in my life after going so long being lost and alone. I couldn’t think about leaving this world, not without.”

“I love you,” Nick kissed her.

“I love you Nicky.”

“We have to call Brian, he was really worried too.” Stacie nodded her head, and called Brian on her cell phone.

“Bri? Hey it’s Stace…good thanks. I’m sorry it’s early I just wanted to tell you that my doctor called me…yeah…I know you’re here for me…but Brian…wait…I know I love you too…that means a lot but Bri…are you going to let me tell you what he said or no?...It’s okay, but he told me I do not have leukemia. They are going to put me on a new medicine for my anemia that should help clear some of the diabetic symptoms I’ve been having…I know thank you…he’s relieved too…yeah sure, here he is,” she handed the phone to Nick. “He wants to talk to you, he likes hearing his own voice this morning. I’m going to go shower.” She kissed Nick and walked into the bathroom to shower and get ready for the day.

Stacie couldn’t help but feel over joy with the results. She wanted to go pick up her prescription and head to the beach for the rest of the day. She also couldn’t stop thinking about Nick and how much she really did love him.

“Can I join you?” she head Nick’s voice enter the bathroom.

“I don’t know can you?”

“MAY I join you?”

“I guess,” she laughed and within seconds Nick was in the shower. “How’s Brian?”

“Happy.”

“And you?”

“You have no idea.”

“Oh I don’t? It was just my body…”

“You know what I mean.” He wrapped his naked body against Stacie’s. They started kissing each other in the steaming water.

“Mmm Nick, I want to, but not without protection. So, the shower is not happening,” her eyes were closed as his lips found her neck.

“Well, we’ll have to wait because I don’t have any. But we can still play,” his lips ran down her neck and over her shoulder.

“I want to go play at the beach,” she opened her eyes laughing.

“Always killing the mood aren’t we?” Nick asked with his hands on his hips.

“Sorry?” she stifled a laugh.

“You will be later!”
