Ok I need some advice... I admit the fan fic world is not a world filled with much originality especially in the romance genre. There's only SO much you can write. I've had A Little Taste of Sin outlined for a few months now. I'm just a VERY slow writer. Recently I came across a fic on AC with a very similair plot which is great. I've been reading it to help me with my own story and to take notes. As the story went on though I've just come to realize that completely by coincidence TWO plot points are like blatantly obviously similair. Like carbon copy similair. Now I know this author is definitely not plagarizing. (How could she when no one has seen my outline, but me and my beta Teri?) It's just the romance genre and its dumb limitations. I'm just concerned because I don't want to make it look like I'm ripping off her, but I also don't want to change my whole story around either. I mean I already started to set up one of the things.
Has anyone had this happen to you before? Any suggestions? What would you do in this situation?
-
I think this happens a lot actually. It's happened to me several times but I guess the only thing is I was the one who had my story up first. LOL
I think everyone kind of understands that there's only so much you can do in fanficland and that sometimes that's going to happen. Maybe if nothing else, this will force you to take a new approach to writing this story, so it doesn't come off as similar. If you are really paranoid about it though, you could always contact the author and let her know. Maybe let her read what you've written to assure her you aren't copying her work?
-
Ergh that would irritate me so much, but I don't think it's ever happened to me before. I think mare is right about possibly contacting the author. Either that or changing it a bit to make it less similar. Boo on the limitations of the romance genre!
-

I'm kind of curious about which stories this happened with. lol
-
Well I left her a review telling her I enjoyed the story and appreciated the direction she was taking it in especially because I am writing a story similair in plot and some of the events were sort of similair by coincidence. I found her AIM name on AC so I'm going to try to IM her and explain myself a lil better to cover myself and assure her that I'm NOT ripping her off. Cuz I know if I were in her position I'd be like Uhh what the hell?
I just don't want to take my story too far from how I see it right now because I'll admit I'm stubborn and I'm REALLY excited about where its going and I see it so clear in my mind that changing it around wouldn't seem right to me at this point. It's just frustrating.

This is one of the reasons I don't read a lot of fanfiction. I know that if I read more stories I would "steal" ideas and then my stories would sound similar to them, but if I don't read any I can honestly say "I didn't know you had a plot line like that too."
My honest opinion would be to stop reading the story even though you like it.

Oh my... Mel, after I was done on the forum I went to check my favourite stories list to see if anything had been updated, and I see a new review on my absolute favourite. Curious, I click in because I'm always interested in people's differing opinions on this differing story. The author of this story and I have been reviewing and talking back and forth for a little while, she's really sweet. If anything I think she'll find it interesting that you had the same idea as her.
Yay! Two stories filled with awesomeness. I'll have to read yours now too! hehe
-
Aww, that sucks, Mel! I would go ahead and write the story the way you want to write it. You might contact the other writer and just tell her. This thread is here as "proof" that you've had this idea going for awhile before posting it.
I don't know that it's happened to me where I've thought of an idea and then found a similar story before getting mine up before... but I have worried that people would think I was copying before, and I have also been contacted by other authors worrying that people would think they were copying me.
Broken was totally inspired by Swollen Issues, and I have always admitted that, but I didn't set out to COPY Swollen Issues. I wanted to take the inspiration and write a story that would make my readers feel the same way I did when I read Swollen, but I obviously wanted to do something different with it so that I wouldn't be copying. There were a lot of similarities between the two at first, but I took Broken in a different direction, and by the end of the two series, hardly any similarities at all.
Awhile after I started writing Code Blue, Kat or Amy (I don't think either of them are on here, but some of you know who I'm talking about) contacted me about their Backstreet General series, which had the same premise of the Boys being doctors. They had been working on it for about as long as we had been working on CB, without realizing our story existed, and they were worried we would see their stories and think they had copied when they hadn't. It didn't bother me because I knew both of them, knew they wouldn't do that, and could see that their story was similar only in the basic premise, not the way it was written or actual storylines.
I don't think I've ever been totally copied, except the blatant plagiarism of Tanja.

Oh yea I LOVE the story! I think its REALLY well written and she's an amazing writer. We'd prolly get along great since we seem to think along the same lines lol
And thanks Sakabelle. My story is actually a sequel, but you can prolly read it without reading the first one. I purposely tried to fill in as much for new readers as possible.
-
LOL sometimes all you have to do is read story titles or summaries.
Too lazy, just tell me. lol

Sequel eh? I need something to read instead of refreshing AC every minute to see if anything has been updated lol...
-
Wheww! I'm glad that most authors seem to be pretty cool with the whole "same idea different place" thing. Makes me feel a lot more at ease. See I knew you girls would reassure me!
And I admit I draw inspiration on things I read too. For instance ALTOS was greatly influenced actually by BMS. You wouldn't think that off the bat, but I was actually really intrigued by what Julie did with keeping Claire and Nick apart for so long and Claire was with Jamie and Nick was with Laureen, yet there was obviously feelings there. Of course I'm choosing to take that scenario with my characters being involved with different people and take it a step further into what would happen if the main characters actually gave into those feelings.
So I know that other fics can spark new ideas with a new spin on it and I think thats really cool about fan fiction. I guess I just need to focus more on the differences in my story.
-

The first story is 60 chapters and its pretty long, but if you're REALLY looking for something to read I'm not going to discourage you.
The first story is Under my Skin and the sequel is A Little Taste of Sin.
And sorry for the shameless plug :-[ I bet Dee is proud lol

Too lazy, just tell me. lol
LOL I can tell you there was one on my Brain Candy site. She had contacted me and asked me to host her and then as I was reading her story it was a knock off of Shadow Woods. She even called it something like OMg what did she call it? AH! I can't even remember, Shadow Grim or something like that. I said "uh...you might want to change that title because it might appear you are copying my story." I knew she wasn't going to stick with it anyway because I can kind of just tell. And sure enough after about three chapters of Shadow Grim she was never heard from again. loll
-
lol washer name Tonja?
-

Naw, 60 chapters isn't that bad :P It'll give me something to read while I'm bored in class wait for other things to be updated :)
-
LOL you know, it might have been. Ironically enough.

And see, I would never know that was inspired by BMS. A lot of people do that. In TV shows and whatnot, it's a common tactic to keep the it couple that everyone wants together apart as long as possible. That's what keeps people interested. Once they get together, you have to find new sources of conflict to keep it interesting; if you just have it be all sunshine and daisies once they're together, it gets really boring after awhile.
-
LOL Mare, I remember you talking about that Shadow Grim story. I guess that's where they say imitation is the highest form of flattery. And if it's a case where the second story is not well-written and doesn't get finished, well, then, who really cares? What would piss me off is if someone deliberately ripped off a story of mine and then got all kinds of acclaim for it, like more than mine did. In all honestly, that would just BUG the crap out of me!! LOL

I hearted that story. <3 Seems kind of blantant to rip of though. And I totally agree with Kelly, was it Tonja? lol
lol Did I ever tell you I was going to draw fanart for it? lmao

Actually LOl I've been meaning to ask you about that because I've gotten SOOOO much crap from my readers that (Sakabelle you may want to skip this post if you plan on reading UMS) OMG Alyssa and Nick aren't together. I'm going to stop reading! It's frustrating because they don't want to hear about them NOT being together, yet they could never work out unless they had that chance to be with other people. They needed that time apart to grow up a little bit. And I agree sunshine and daises would drive me nuts!
Teri and I were actually just talking about this the other day. We feel like angst is a dying genre because readers don't want to read anything reflecting any kind of pain because its "depressing" but I think that it takes that deep dark emotional pain to become the best person you can be.

I would get soooo bothered by that. lol
Good thing is, no one reads enough of my stuff to want to rip them off in the first place. lol
Let's see what happens if I keep my romance on track. Backstreet x sorority girl may become the new cliche story. lmao

Wheww! I'm glad that most authors seem to be pretty cool with the whole "same idea different place" thing. Makes me feel a lot more at ease. See I knew you girls would reassure me!
I don't know, I have a hard time with this. I'd like to think of my stuff as a little more orginal but I don't mind if people have similar ideas, it's hard to tell if someone is ripping you off (unless their name is Tonja) I guess the stories I'm more proud of I'd be put off if I read something similar.

LOL, I try NOT to end my stories with sunshine and daises... I am so anti happy endings I'd throw everyone for a loop if something did end happy. And yes I HAVE written a happy ending.
-
I will always prefer angst to fluff. I got crap from my readers too, but at the same time, it did keep them coming back for more. (Well, most of them.) The thing is, I didn't purposely do that just to keep the readers' interest... it was more to keep MY interest. Because like I said, I prefer drama to fluff. I had fun with the fluffy scenes that are in BMS, but when it came time to break up Nick and Claire, I was SO ready to do it! And then, of course, I was ready to get them back together way before I actually could, but if I had tried to write another story with them together the whole way through, I would have just gotten bored again. And I would have come up with more sources of external conflict, most likely resulting in physical pain for one or both of them, because that's just what I do LOL. But it was so overdone in those stories already that I knew I just needed to STOP. I have a whole plot outline for a third story written out, after getting some ideas from readers, but it's so over the top that I kinda always knew I would never write it.
-

I feel like maybe I'm the same way, lmao. Everyone has to die before I'm happy. lol

I'm only fifty chapters in and this made me giggle my butt off. lol

Well my happy endings to me are the ones that end sickly sweet. I don't mind endings where everyone is not dead and things work out, but maybe not in a way they wanted. I suppose... *tries very hard not to shrug*
-
LMAO, DEE, don't listen! No taking notes right now! HAPPY ENDINGS!!! HAPPY ENDINGS!!! HAPPY ENDINGS!!!! YAY HAPPY ENDINGS!!!
I thought of this briefly and laughed when I posted my own response to that. lol
-
lol I live for fairy-tale endings.
-
My theory on endings is this:
If the whole story is fluffy happiness, throw in a sad or at least bittersweet ending to change it up.
If the whole story is gloom and doom, then come on, at least let it end well!
I prefer the latter myself.
-

I think its important not to overstay your welcome. I mean in some instances you can get a whole series out of characters, but I think a 3rd Broken story would have been too much. They went through SOOOO much already, yet I'd be bored with a story that just was lovey dovey Claire and Nick popping out some more kids. I definitely prefer the angst too and I got a lot of crap cuz UMS wasn't a "happy ending." But I know that I'm not the only one getting crap and I finally looked at who the comments had been coming from and I realized that I don't exactly value those people's opinions the best anyway. I now feel confident in what I've decided to write. And if readers want to read fluff about perfect marriages with perfect sex lifes and perfect children then there are quite a few out of them, but I think that the BEST writers are the ones who aren't afraid to experiment with the darker side of emotions. That's why I LOVE angst and I feel like so many readers are disregarding it lately.
-
My actually theory on endings is to give the story the ending that serves the story. You shouldn't go out of your way to end it happily or sad if it will just ruin the story in the end. :)
But most of my stories seem to end depressingly.l ol

lol this is true. but my stories usually tend to merit happy endings. I think Searching For Mecy was the closest thing I've ever written to a not perfect ending and it was that I just couldn't end it fluffy when all those messed up people weren't fluffy. but then Searching For Mercy isn't my best story either. So maybe I should just leave the angst up to the pros...

That's a good point, about looking at whose opinions you really value. I kinda figured that out too. For instance, one of the people who kinda turned on my characters early on in BMS, yet continued to read and send feedback, was a writer herself and wrote a completely different kind of romance than what BMS is, and I realized after awhile that she just didn't "get" it. She didn't "get" what I was going for. Whereas other people were totally on the same page as me; they "got" Nick and Claire and their relationship and so on. So I put more value in their feedback than the other's. Although when one of those turned and started critiquing, then it sucked because I knew she had a point in what she was saying.

Well, yeah LOL. You have to go with what you think is the right way to end it, whether it's happy, sad, or bittersweet, and no matter what your readers will think.

lol I'd say I'm a fan of fluffy. I'm hardly an expert on anything.

Very similair situation here. Some people just are completely different writers and have completely different styles and I've come to learn that you can't change a person and MAKE them write how you want the story to go. If I'm getting sick of the direction a story is heading in so much so that it upsets me to that extent, the best thing is to stop reading and shut up and stop complaining.

Aww... Kelly I LOVED Searching for Mercy! How's the sequel going?
-
I like sad endings sometimes... they make you think. Although, happy endings can do that as well. I suppose it's true, the ending needs to fit with the story. Typically I like to have some parts work out, and some parts not go exactly according to plan. Also, I like to kill off my characters... cause I'm horrible and sadistic like that..:P
I actually wrote story way back in the day with the purpose of it having a sad. Mostly because I got irritated with all the fluffy teenyboppper perfect romance back on FF.net... I gave them a sad story... some liked it, some didn't, it was good times.

LOL a perfect example of this is Me and Mare. I respect the hell out of her writing and am always thinking I need to read her stuff cause I would probably really like it, but then I read the summaries and I'm like.... mmmm.... there are others that sound more interesting to me. She's the same way with me I think. (or at least I hope lol) I think she'd be back in the suicide thread if she had to read some of my stuff. But that doesn't mean what I write is bad, just not her thing.
-
So...once again, I'm late in joining this thread, but, first off, I'm really curious as to which story this is, Mel, that seems to be so similar to ALTOS...don't worry, you don't have to say it LOL
Secondly, I think as a fellow romance author, I have had lots of difficulties lately coming up with different, unique plots that aren't your usual run-of-the-mill ones. And it's HARD. I think there's bound to be, like Mare said, lots of similarities because there's only so much you can do in the fanfic romance genre. The most creative I've ever been was with the story that Kelly and I are writing with Brian as Backstreet Boy by day and superhero by night lol Still, it IS difficult to come up with new and different plot twists to the same old tired romances about Boy and some girl.
That being said, I'm IN LOVE with angst because that's all I ever seem to write LOL I can't help it, I can't get away from it, and I totally understood where both Mel and Julie are coming from with UMS/ALTOS and Broken/BMS. Dude, I live and thrive off of angst because I don't even know HOW to write fluffy lol Every time I try, it turns out all sorts of angsty in the end lmao
Anyway...now I have no idea where I was going with this...
Oh yeah! Endings: I totally agree with Dee in giving a story the ending it deserves. Of course, I'm also totally in love with happy endings so it's super doubtful that any story I write will not end with sunshine and bunnies...so I guess I don't really follow my own logic, but yeah...
Okay, I'll shut up now.

I love sunshine and bunnies!.... and bloodbaths. lol
the ones with all three of those elements make for the best stories... Grosse Point Blank... One of my favorite movies ever... sunshine, bunnies and bloodbaths! All in the same movie!! YAY!

I live by this code: "Whatever floats your boat as long as you don't sink mine."
Too bad not everyone does.
Aww poor Sarah joining the thread late. The story isn't a big idea basically it has a very similair plot in the whole Alyssa/Sean/Nick/Shayla rectangle only different characters. It IS hard to come up with original romance ideas which is why I try to focus more on angst. For instance I'll use an affair since that's where my story is heading. I COULD focus soley on the physical side of having an affair. I'm hoping though to go the angstier (is that a word?) route and take each character and discuss how the affair impacts each character. There's a lot of REALLY good emotional material there I think to delve into which a lot of other writers might overlook.
-

Oh yeah, that's true. But... I guess, to me, what Mel and I were talking about is like this... when I was in junior high and high school, I had to read a lot of classic literature for my English classes that I didn't particularly enjoy. Just to throw an example out there, I remember having to read "Across Five Aprils" in 7th grade and HATING that book. I don't even remember WHY I hated the book anymore because I barely remember the story, just that it takes place during the Civil War and the main character's name was Jed or something. I even like history, but I disliked that book; I probably thought it was boring. Obviously, it must have some redeeming value for my teacher to make us read it, and maybe if I read it again now, as an adult, I would figure out what that was, but at the time, I just thought it was a boring piece of crap. Probably there was something I was supposed to "get" from it and did not, but my teacher did get, and that's why she liked the book enough to assign it to us when she could have assigned countless other classics.
All stories are up for interpretation, but as the writer, you know what you're going for, and you know when someone just doesn't "get" that, and while you may appreciate them reading and offering their opinions, you may not value them as much as the people who do seem to "get" it. I did not "get" Across Five Aprils. I comprehended it, but I failed to see whatever magic it offered that made it worthy of reading in seventh grade. That doesn't mean it's a bad book, and it doesn't mean I was wrong either... it's just one of those things that comes down to a combination of taste and life experience, I guess. I bet if I were to read that book now, I would probably like it a little more, but I still might not love it.
Hopefully that semi-rambling post made sense LOL.

I live by this code: "Whatever floats your boat as long as you don't sink mine."
Too bad not everyone does.
I think everyone here does though. :)

Yea everyone who regularly posts here is kewl. *huggles*

Oh yeah, that's true. But... I guess, to me, what Mel and I were talking about is like this... when I was in junior high and high school, I had to read a lot of classic literature for my English classes that I didn't particularly enjoy.....
Hopefully that semi-rambling post made sense LOL.
Aw, I got that. :) And yes, it did make sense.
It's the same idea as "go with the ending that serves the story." I think being an author is a lot harder than beign a reader. Everyone wants things to go a certain way or fit into a subset of a certain mold. And not everyone does that; it's what I like and hate about fanfic all at once.
I mean, at one side, if everyone had the same tastes and worldviews because then we would all be able to enjoy each other's work and have awesome discussions about it. But because we're all different, I feel like we can appreciate what everyone else does more. Being writers ourselves, I mean.
It's like finding your friends. No one wants a friend just like them, you want friends that have qualities you want, because then hopefully you can grow because of that. :)
And that was a ramble. lmao
There was a book I felt that way about too in tenth grade.... The character's name was Phinneas and he broke his legs and then died or something... I don't remember what it was called... But I wanted to shoot myself... Oh, and "Of Mice and Men." I cannot stand that book. lmao

A Seperate Peace... OMFG I HATED that book too. All I remember is Phinneas and he fell out of a tree and broke his legs. Otherwise there was NO point whatsoever to it lol
-
That totally makes sense, Julie. And actually I'm just waiting for my readers to turn on me in my current story because I can see the overall picture and know it will all come together in the end to make a good story, but for my readers right now some of them don't see that and they're already starting to fidget.
-

LMAO I can't even remember what was required reading for me in high school. I never read any of it. The only book I actually read cover to cover in high school (required wise) was Huck Finn.

Which story is that? If We Were a Movie?

Yep, I agree.
LOL I didn't mind "Of Mice and Men" because at least it was short. But the ending sucked!! I like angst and all, but that was seriously effed up LOL.
In my Brit Lit class my junior year of h.s., we got to choose between reading "Pride and Prejudice" and "Frankenstein." Naturally, I chose Frankenstein, 1) because P&P sounded like a total bore, and 2) because I love horror and love the movie versions of Frankenstein, so I was actually really excited about reading it. I read Frankenstein and really disliked it... it's one of the rare cases where I thought the 1930s movie version, which is very different, was a lot better. I actually found Frankenstein's monster/creature to be a more sympathetic character in the movie than in the book, even though I think it was supposed to be the other way around LOL. But I just hated him by the end of the book.
We also had to read two Arthur Miller plays, "Death of a Salesmen" and "The Crucible," and I didn't like either of those either. I was disappointed by "The Crucible" because I thought that one would be interesting, being about the Salem Witch Trials and all, but I didn't really like it.
"Great Expectations" was another one that I found to be a pointless yawner of a story. Its only redeeming quality was Miss Havisham because she was at least an interesting character. Well, that and the fact that South Park did a parody of it, and I got the humor because I had read it.
I will never be the type of person to sit around reading those classics for fun, but there were some that I at least kind of got into. I liked "Romeo & Juliet" and "Macbeth"... "The Odyssey"... "Wuthering Heights"...

OMG yes! That's the book. lmao!
The only thing I really remember about it besides him falling out of a tree and dying later on (sorry to anyone who wanted to read it but hasn't yet :(), was that we had a quiz on it about half way through or something. And for one of the questions, I answered "He hated that they were playing badmittion for summer athletics." And my English teacher was like "No, the answer is that he hated the Athletic Program." And I remember being pissed off because he totally only hated the badmitton. lol

Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book of all time! It was so amazing! lol I pulled a Lenni and was screaming at book characters. lol
I felt the same way about Arthur Miller, go figure. lol The Crucible was only enjoyable for me because we got to make parodies of it in class and my group did Peter Pan as the Salem Witch trials. lmao. I don't have the script anymore, but it was hilarious. lol
I love all Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet is my all time fave though... Maybe it's because of Leo? lol *wants to watch that movie now*
-

LMAO seriously! I loved reading R&J because I could imagine Leo and everyone saying the lines in the movie, and it all made so much more sense to me that way LOL. We watched the 1960s movie of it after we got done reading it, and all us girls kept telling our teacher we should have been watching the Leo version, but she hadn't seen it. It was good to see the other one though.

That sounds hilarious!
We did something like that in 8th grade, when we read The Hobbit. We got to make up skits of a different part from the story, and my group did something about trolls (my memories of that book are pretty scattered too), and I remember we actually painted our faces green at school and sat around a pretend campfire, and I had brought some of my old Barbies for us to "roast" over the fire and gnaw on LOL. It was hilarious at the time.
-
yeah. have you been reading that one? lol are you getting fidgety?
No way! I meant to give you a more in depth review cuz I read it last week. Readers are stupid! I'm actually torn because duh you want him with Jordan, but in a lot of ways I can sympathize with Erin and I know VERY well from personal experience what it feels like to be someone's second best, so I feel for her as well. I'm waiting paitently to see where its going actually. It could go either way right now.
That's the problem sometimes with readers. They want to immdiately jump to the first female that is introduced defense because that's who they 'should" wind up with. And anyone else who comes between that is a bitch. I think I'd like to write a fic where the first girl introduced is the bitch. But then my readers would like her because she was with the guy first.
-

I am not a fan. *big shocker* I hate the ending.
actually I am surprised though that Shakespeare In Love is one of my favorite movies because it's ending sucks too.
but I actually made Josh read Pride and Prejudice to me. It was too hard for me to read on my own and I really really wanted to read it. I LOVE that book!!!! One of my faves of all time! I heart Jane!

Funny story. When we read it in class, our teacher actually let us watch both versions and we compared it to the book. It was amazing. lol
I remember distinctly proclaiming my love for Leo once and Kevin replied with a mumbled "I hate Leonardo DiCaprio." And it was only years later I understood why. ROFL.

Omg, that's what I hated about English classes. If it's true that literature is up to interpretation, how could you mark an answer like that wrong? Plus, that just sounds PICKY!!
Also, I've said this before, but I really find it hard to believe that when all those authors wrote their stories, they purposefully included all of the symbolism and whatnot that we learn about when reading them in English classes today. They probably had no idea how much their stories would be analyzed centuries later.
-
*sigh* Oh Leo... *thinks back to 8th and 9th grade*
*sigh* suddenly feels very old.

lmao We did something like that for Romeo and Juliet too in high school. It was the scene where they all found out Juliet was "dead." I was the nurse and Kevin was Friar Laurence. And all through the rehersal I kept calling Juliet "Houlietta" and Kevin kept saying that "The nurse and the friar should go make out out back." Sad thing was, when it came time to perform, we both slipped up with those lovely gems. lol

To be fair, it's not called a trajedy for nothing. lol
Jane is love! I've been meaning to read Sense and Sensibilty. Kelly, can we read it together? lmao Like a weekly read aloud book club?
-

aww. now see. that makes you one of those readers that just "gets" it then. lol. Yay for you reading my story. Thankies and squishy hugs!
But you can totally see why I'm waiting for readers to turn on me though, right?
and LMAO at the one girl who told me that Erin was just faking it and is really some scheming bitch just trying to move in on Jordan's man. She's one of those readers that doesn't "get" it.
-
*sigh* Oh Leo... *thinks back to 8th and 9th grade*
Why are you thinking back? lol I still love Leo.
Ps, Julie, are we still game to see that Titanic 2 movie when it comes out? lmao Midnight Showing poss?
-
I've never read ANY Jane Austen or Bronte sister novels *hides* How that happened between Honors English and minoring in English in college is beyond me. I feel like I've gypped myself big time.
So yea I want to jon your Jane Austen book club lol
-

It was just picky, especially since he only hated the badmitton and not the rest of the summer athletic program. lol
I know, right? lmao I wonder what will be the classics from this generation? lol Maybe something one of us writes; that would be hilarious. Students analyzing all the hidden symbolism in Broken or something. lol

-
To be fair, it's not called a trajedy for nothing. lol
Jane is love! I've been meaning to read Sense and Sensibilty. Kelly, can we read it together? lmao Like a weekly read aloud book club?
aww yes! I do! lol I have to read them aloud or I don't get it and I usually stick to young adult fiction for a reason if I read anything or else I have to read stuff that my husband wants to read too so that he'll read with me. But he read P&P to me because he's kind of girly and loves Jane too!
-
Why are you thinking back? lol I still love Leo.

Hells to the yes!!! I'm SO there! ;D

OMG Are readers retarded? I take offense in that because in many ways I know exactly what it feels like to be Erin. Guys only tend to pay attention to me to get over someone else :( But how shy she is and everything reminds me of myself so I have a soft spot for her. I like Jordan too though. Can't Brian date them both? lol
And no Dee I'm not much of a Leo fan anymore. Another blonde came along and stole my heart not long after my Leo phase... ;)
-

I've never read any Jane Austen either, since I passed on P&P. I'm sure we can all say that about at least one classic author, unless you're one who reads the classics just for the sake of reading them. But English teachers can only assign so many of them in one year.
-
It was just picky, especially since he only hated the badmitton and not the rest of the summer athletic program. lol
I know, right? lmao I wonder what will be the classics from this generation? lol Maybe something one of us writes; that would be hilarious. Students analyzing all the hidden symbolism in Broken or something. lol
LOL what's hilarious about this conversation/that comment is that when I was writing Broken, at least the beginning of it, I was in AP English my senior year of high school, and all we did was analyze the symbolism of this crap, and so I thought I was going to throw some symbolism into my writing. I think that's why I got into my dream interpretation phase I got into with that story LOL. It all makes me cringe when I look back on it now.
-
aww yes! I do! lol I have to read them aloud or I don't get it and I usually stick to young adult fiction for a reason if I read anything or else I have to read stuff that my husband wants to read too so that he'll read with me. But he read P&P to me because he's kind of girly and loves Jane too!
Great, let's do it then. lol I have to go buy it first though... lol
I've heard Emma is good too. :)

Hells to the yes!!! I'm SO there! ;D
Excellent! ;D If we're going to the Midnight showing, maybe we should dress up in costumes... lol
-
And no Dee I'm not much of a Leo fan anymore. Another blonde came along and stole my heart not long after my Leo phase... ;)
If it's Matt Damon or Nick Carter that totally doesn't count because I'm in love with all three of them. ROFL

The only hard part is keeping up w/ reading a novel between reading for classes and reading fics.

Well considering we're on a BSB thread here it's totally Matt Damon LOL :P

Yeah, I love the sotry of both Sense and Sensibility and Emma though I like the story of Emma much better. I also like Mansfield Park a lot.
of course this is all movie based lol since the only one I've read is P&P
-
Excellent! ;D If we're going to the Midnight showing, maybe we should dress up in costumes... lol
LMAO I'm going as a zombie Titanic victim. Will you help me with my icicle makeup?

LMAO. I knew you would have. ;) It's not so cringe worthy... Ending ever chapter with "But he was wrong" in the beginning was a bit repetative, so I'd like to see them analyze that. ;) I'll bet they'll be really refreshed at how researched it is though. :) I enjoyed it.... so far...
-

Aww, I love you Mel! You can be my first love too if you'd like. Not my second. I happen to be much more like Erin myself and have been passed over for the Jordan's (or the Alison's) of the world time and time again. But seriously, I love that you can relate to her. I'm glad I have at least one reader who isn't giving me dirty looks right now.
-
LMAO I'm going as a zombie Titanic victim. Will you help me with my icicle makeup?
Awesome, because I'm going as not old/not dead Rose. lmao I will as long as you help me lace up my bodice. lmao

I wonder what they'll think about the beginning with Leah. Was it a bad thing when I first started reading Broken I kept singing to myself "I'm in love with a stripper..." LOL
And Dee I didn't judge the fan fic awards for a reason, so how could I pretend?
-

Yes. An excellent movie!

*shrug* Pretend to pretend.

Hey, I got a third of the way done in five hours. That's worth something right? lol And I totally would have finished it if it weren't for pesky things like school. ROFL
-
It is good. You should go watch the movie. It rocks!
Or read the book. :P
-
Or read the book. :P
I'm all about instant gratification. :P But I would like to read that one as well. I need to find books on CD...

-
LOL that's okay, I understand. :)
hey thats way further than I got. I keep wanting to read BMS because I LOVED Broken. But I'm so intimidated by the length and I have the weird sequel phobia... Same reason I haven't read Rose's Glitz and Glamour.
-
For sure!
Awesome! Who should we get to dress up as our Leo?
-
I'm all about instant gratification. :P But I would like to read that one as well. I need to find books on CD...

Actually, I don't doubt that it is a book on CD.

If it makes you feel better, it's still saved on my computer, so I'll finish it eventually. lol

lol
Well, if you've finished it, doesn't that mean you're farther than I am?
-
most of them are on CD somewhere. I've read along to quite a few books that way. It helps me a lot to read along with someone. So when Josh isn't around I will order them on CD. But I read Twilight and New Moon all by myself in like a week. Granted they are probably middle school difficulty level, but still. My husband was shocked. *wants a gold star*
-
lol
Well, if you've finished it, doesn't that mean you're farther than I am?
LMAO how did I think you were talking about BMS? I haven't started that one...
-
lmao, how did I know Team America would end up in here somehow? lol
Because I can tie anything back to South Park or Team America. :D But seriously, any time you mention Matt Damon, I just think of TA... I can't help it... They've ruined him for me.
-
hey thats way further than I got. I keep wanting to read BMS because I LOVED Broken. But I'm so intimidated by the length and I have the weird sequel phobia... Same reason I haven't read Rose's Glitz and Glamour.
LOL that's okay; I never like sequels as much as the original. BMS is more your speed in terms of fluffy romance though, although it's not exactly fluffy most of the time. But it is very much a romance!
It's also really long, though, so I understand LOL.

one day Julie... one day...

LMAO how did I think you were talking about BMS? I haven't started that one...
Heck if I know. The chapters looked daunting, so I avoided them both forever. They're surprisingly bite sized for there being so many of them. lol
-
Because I can tie anything back to South Park or Team America. :D But seriously, any time you mention Matt Damon, I just think of TA... I can't help it... They've ruined him for me.
lmao. I knew it.
So if I were to say "eggs," could you find me a South Park clip to go with it? lmao
-
lmao. I knew it.
So if I were to say "eggs," could you find me a South Park clip to go with it? lmao
Yes.
http://www.southparkstudios.com/downloads/video.php?season=9&page=1
There's one in the far right column, towards the bottom of the page, from the episode "Follow That Egg," in which the kids have to couple up and take care of an egg for a class project, and Mr. Garrison tries to prove that same-sex couples can't raise children by pairing Stan and Kyle together and then hiring an assassin to shoot their egg after they fail to break it.
-
^ROFL. I have actually seen that episode. It was hilarious.
Here's another word.... "Headphones." Go nuts.
-
LMAO everything I need to know about life, I learned from South Park.
-
Everything I need to know about life I learned that Julie learned on South Park. lmao
-

http://www.truveo.com/South-Park-Make-it-Right/id/1091960990 There's a part with Cartman in the recording studio with headphones on. :D

Yesssssss....

Wow... just wow... lol
-
Yesssssss....
lmao Well, at least you can admit it. lol
-
The hardest part is finding the clips, cause there really aren't many on YouTube. I think they take them off. But there are so many episodes, and they're so diverse in their randomness, I really can tie anything back to South Park.
-
I figured that was why it was taking you so long. lol
If we were sitting in the same room and had the DVDs, I'm sure it would be relatively easy. lol
-
Yep! And I've got them all LOL.
-
Would you be surprised if I said my first though was "I knew you would"? lol
-
No LOL.
-
I'm all like Alyson Hannigan in American Pie. "This one time, on South Park..."
-
Okay before I even try to understand what's going on in here, about what page did we begin going off on a tangent? lol
-
I hearted that story. <3 Seems kind of blantant to rip of though. And I totally agree with Kelly, was it Tonja? lol
lol Did I ever tell you I was going to draw fanart for it? lmao
Aww no, you didn't lol that would be cool.
-
okay just so you know i'm only page 2 right now so if you're wondering wtf is she talking about? i'm way back there, when you all were still on topic lol
The endings thing. I think happy endings and or sad endings are fine as long as they fit with what you have written. what I hate are stories that you can tell the writer just wanted to shock you so at the last minute throws a random death in or a random wedding or something lol no explainations just does it. To me it's just abrupt and silly.
*i'll shrug for Lore* lol
-
LOL a perfect example of this is Me and Mare.
LOL yes, and I have figured out that my summaries need work after reading score sheets. I get what you're saying though. I think it would be interesting and another good challenge idea if at some point I put a vague plot and everyone had to write a story based around it. I could see al of us coming up with different things while having to work off the same idea just based on our writing styles.
-

Score sheets from judging of the awards? That reminds me. Could we as nominated authors request to see our score sheet? I think it would be good for constructive critisicm. I wouldn't mind seeing mine so I can see what my strengths and weaknesses are.

ooh I was gonna ask that too. I'd love to see them.(at least mine) It's probably great constructive criticism.
-
I'm all like Alyson Hannigan in American Pie. "This one time, on South Park..."
ROFL! I hope that's your new catchprase. lol

Can you guess which scene? lol

Do people really add weddings in for shock value? That almost seems comical. lol

That soundsd really interesting. I'd do it.
No groundhogs in the summary though, please. lol

To both of you, I think you are allowed to ask, as long as you don't plan on flaming the judges. lol

Moi? Flame you guys? What would make you thin I'd do that? *smiles innocently* lol

:P Nice try.
-
ROFL! I hope that's your new catchprase. lol
It will be! :D
Like this one time, on South Park, Cartman went around saying "Tits!" as his new catchphrase. It was like another word for "Cool!" or "Sweet!" It pissed everyone else off, but it was pretty hilarious.
-
Do people really add weddings in for shock value? That almost seems comical. lol
For me, it'd have to be a gay wedding to really shock me. That's one thing I've never seen in Bsb fanfic... a Bsb civil union. Maybe that happens in some slash stories; I dunno. I picture slash as being mostly about sex and spooning, but I've never made it far enough into one to see how it ended.
-
That soundsd really interesting. I'd do it.
No groundhogs in the summary though, please. lol
I think it sounds interesting too; it could be cool to see how similar/different our stories turned out being.
-

Actually, that would be pretty funny if the Boys spent all their free time talking about some girl Nick was dating, and then in the end, Nick went and married AJ. lmao
-

And what if some of us had the same ideas? lol
-

LMFAO!!! There's my ending for Teeny right there... *goes to add it to outline*
-
And what if some of us had the same ideas? lol
We probably would, but that's okay. That would be part of the interestingnes s of it, to see who had the same ideas and which ideas those were and who took it in a completely different direction, and so on.
-

LMAO! Really? I love you. lol

I'm excited. lol
-
LMAO! Really? I love you. lol
Sure, why not? I really did just go paste your post into my "outline" for it LOL.
-
yay I finally finished the thread! lol and for themost part we all stayone on topic minus the whole team america Matt Damon thing.
As far as score sheets, I believe you can ask but i'm not sure if you'll know who judged what. They are just scores, not comments really but because i'm the queen *ahem* I got a chance to look some of them over. I just saw my lowest scores always tended to be in the summary lmao and I would have to agree, i'm not a summary queen. I guess I need a summary Yoda to guide me along.
-

ROFL! That will go down as the best plot twist in history. *makes a mental note for next year's Felix Awards* lol
-

Hooray!! LOL who knows if it will be done by next year's Felix awards. It's been an ongoing project since 2002 LOL. I rarely open it up anymore, but I would still like to finish it someday.
-
I bet some of us would have similar ideas but overall they would be executed differently.
If I gave everyone one sentence to base an entire sotry off of.
Nick walked into the kitchen with his head hung low, he never expected to see...
that's pretty open for interpretation lol
-

I feel like most of the time we tangent and loop back. lol
I commented on all of mine in a vague reasoning. lol And if it makes you feel better, I feel like none of us were ever a fan of summaries. lol
-

I thought you were supposed to give us a summary to go off of, not a sentence. lol
-
Eh, I changed my mind, besides I suck at summaries. lmao weren't you paying attention?

Personally, I don't think I gave anyone full points for their summary because there weren't any that made me jump out of my seat, going "OMG, I HAVE to read that story!!!" That would have been a 3/3 summary to me. If it was just a "Hm, that looks like it could be kind of interesting...," that was more like a 2/3 summary. If it was kind of a "Meh..." summary or not really much of a summary at all, that was a 1/3.
-
I thought you were supposed to give us a summary to go off of, not a sentence. lol
Yeah, that's more of a story start. Surely we'd all picture different things with that. I just pictured something really disturbing.
-
Eh, I changed my mind, besides I suck at summaries. lmao weren't you paying attention?
Well, if you suck at summaries you could just make sure it's extra vague. lol

You know, I actually think I ended up giving every summary the exact same score. ROFL.
We should seriously just do away with summaries all together. lol Or go with Mare's fifteen word limit.
And with that logic, the next summary for PBox shall be "Nick is a demon. Yes it's fantasy. There, I saved you the trouble of reading." lol
-
LMAO DEE! That is the most beautiful summary I've ever read!
-
Yeah, that's more of a story start. Surely we'd all picture different things with that. I just pictured something really disturbing.
The first thing I thought was "that breakfast was still out." Because that was totally my reaction this morning when I walked downstairs at eleven thirty and hoped that breakfast hadn't been locked back in the kitchen. lol
-

LMAO!!
I wouldn't want to do away with summaries; then people would complaining that they suck at titles, because that's all there would be to go off of. Or Mare would be complaining because more people would rely on banners to attract readers to their stories.
I like summaries; I'm just not always wowed by them. If I'm politely curious, though, enough to click on the story and check out the first chapter, then the summary has done its job.
-

I try. lmao
-
The first thing I thought was "that breakfast was still out." Because that was totally my reaction this morning when I walked downstairs at eleven thirty and hoped that breakfast hadn't been locked back in the kitchen. lol
That's a nice way of finishing the sentence.
-
I hate summaries. I mean, they're completely necessary, I just hate writing them.
-

Judging the reactions, maybe you would all click on it for the humor of it. lol
LMAO! It's either banners or summaries? Oh this could turn into a bloody little argument. lol
I usually pull that "*snort* Oh please" reaction to summaries. lol There was one summary I freaked out about though because it was actually a mini synopsis of the entire novel. lol
-
That's a nice way of finishing the sentence.
lol Thanks. The next sentence would be "Nick was no longer depressed, and a bright smile crossed his face." lol
-
I hate summaries. I mean, they're completely necessary, I just hate writing them.
Seconded. lol
-
ugh and then you know you'll start seeing the I suck at making banners about summaries so just read the story! lol
I think i'm just going to use pallendromes from now on for summaries and always the same one lol
Between his Lover's Eyes
Summary: a man a plan a canal panama
-

LMFAO that was delightfully random.
And would that be a bullet between his lover's eyes, or what? If so, the summary should just be one word: "BANG!"
-
LMAO yes, good idea!
-
I think my next story is going to be called "Untitled," with an abstract design as a banner, the "I suck at summaries, so please read this story" summary, and every genre and every Backstreet Boy listed as a character. I bet some people would click on it just to see what it was about LOL.

LMAO! Is that better or worse than "I suck at summaries, so please read"? lol
ROFL! I spent three minutes making sure it was a palendrome. It really is. lol

Would it have every warning listed too? Because you know death and domestic abuse are my all time favorites. I won't read it if they're not there. >:( lol

Oh, for sure!! I won't write a story without death and domestic abuse.
-
lmao did you not believe me?
It's just a more 'creative' way to say I suck at summaries so please read lol
then you'll get the reviews, "What's a palendrome? is that like some kind of exotic cheese or something?" lol
yes i'm being very random. I'm off to birthday dinner now. :)
-
The lover's name should totally be Hannah.
Good call. LMAO

Excellent! I look forward to it then. And I expect to be notified of its imminent posting. lol

No, there were just so many words, I wasn't sure. lol
lmao. Maybe you should make use of it. ;)
Exotic apricot, obviously. lol
Have fun. lol
-
Oh, and "Of Mice and Men." I cannot stand that book. lmao
My class in Junior high we saw the movie version, we all laughed when Lennie died, it was just the way he died that was funny. I mean, yeah its pretty messed up, but the way he went was funny. Its a 'you had to be there' moment.
-

LOL!! We watched the movie too, but oddly enough, I don't remember the specifics of that part.
-
I never saw the movie.

Don't worry, you didn't miss much.

Figured not. lol

We feel like angst is a dying genre because readers don't want to read anything reflecting any kind of pain because its "depressing" but I think that it takes that deep dark emotional pain to become the best person you can be.
Angst is the best genre ever! It means that someone else's life is more depressing then mine! <--- Joking! LOL! I get so bored of boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, all sunshine and daises, she gives up everything to travel the world with him, then it either goes one of two ways - she ends up pregnant and they get married or they get married and have babies.
Give me some seedy affairs, illnesses, accidents, seperations anyday! Makes life a lot more intersting!
-
^ Ditto! Angst is like a cathartic release; it makes you feel better about your own problems LOL.
-
I write the best angst when I'm in a really pissy mood. I wrote Left and Leaving while I was fuming at my boyfriend, and people seemed to enjoy that lol
-

I just write angst best. Period. lol I can't do fluff the way I'd like to, which means Kelly picks up my slack in our collab lol
-
I suck at angst. I like it... sometimes... but I suck at it. I actually really enjoy the suspense a lot more than I ever thought I would though. Some of my favorite fanfics have been suspense ones. And lol if you think about all the fics that are my favorites, like next to none of them are fluffy romances. Strange. Those are always my favorite to read and most definitely my faves to write, but they are never my favorite stories. I guess I'm just too picky and it's really hard to get them right. I'm still trying, maybe thats why I keep writing one fluffy romance after then next. Well, mostly... Mercy was my attempt at angst and I'm still not sure how I feel about that one. Interesting experience, but I think I'll leave the angst up to the pros.
-

Now we're talking! LOL That's MY kind of story lol

LOl That would be... I'm the self proclaimed queen of angst and I don't think I could even do that!
