Title: Realistic vs. Entertaining
Post by: RokofAges75 on July 12, 2007, 07:43:15 PM
Readers... when reading a fanfic, which is more important to you:  that the story be realistic, or that it be entertaining, if not always realistic?

Fantasies and other stories that aren't intended to be "realistic" don't count in this.
Think of a realistic fiction - would you rather it seem totally like real life, or is it okay to pump up the drama to make it more entertaining, even if some of the realism is sacrificed?  Do you mind reading stories that have so much going on they almost feel like a soap opera (but are still well-written and definitely entertaining), or do you avoid them for more realistic stories?

Vote and discuss. :)

Okay... so if my favorite genre doesn't count...

I think it's better when it's more realistic... Because honestly, the more it seems like a soap opera, the stupider it tends to get....

I mean, there's something for some mysticism... But honestly, soap operas ought to be saved for soap operas. That's what I think, anyway...

It really depends... I mean i admit sometimes when I'm in the mood I like a drama filled story with a lot of soap opera twists, but it depends on how its written. I do like stories that are SOMEWHAT realistic. I don't want to read about evil twins and people coming back from the dead for instance... But give me love triangles and affairs and crap and some good (not overly cliched) baby drama I'll read. If characters act in a way thats not realistic, (for instance a female character not at all being at least a tiny bit angry that she's been cheated on) I tend to lose stock in it.

I also prefer characters to be a lil more realistic. I'd rather read about REAL people then stories where the main female is an actress, model, heiress etc unless its integral to the plot.

Sorry LOL.  But fantasy and stuff like that really ISN'T realistic in the first place.  Doesn't mean it can't be a great story, but I would say if you're reading that genre, you're already looking for something entertaining compared to something that's just like real life.

True. :)

But there's a difference between fantasy and unrealistic reality.

I mean, I read a fanfic once where there was a bus crash, Nick was kidnapped, and had cancer...

It was a little too much for me. :D
Title: Re: Realistic vs. Entertaining
Post by: mare on July 12, 2007, 09:10:14 PM
Another good question. I voted realistic. The thing is with fanfic having to do with real people as opposed to say, a movie or TV show fandom, I think it's important to keep the characters as real as possible. Entertainment is fine but when it gets a little out there it crosses the line from entertainment to like you said Julie, soap opera-ish which to some people may be enjoyable but to others (like me) not so much lol

All in one fan fic. It was a really long time ago... I don't think you did.

They could... That is true... But it just seemed so unrealistic that they would. If I remember correctly... His kidnapper diagnosed his cancer. :D

LMAO!!! Wow well if you're going to get kidnapped by someone, at least it was a doctor?

I know I didn't write it. I actually haven't tackled a terminal disease yet.

Well, you should definitely make a rewrite of the above mentioned your next project then. ;)

:D   Omg, that would be hilarious.  Maybe I'd actually finish that MST LOL.  The one I have isn't finished because the story it was on wasn't that easy to make fun of.  It was weird, but good, so I got bored with it.

Dee, do you have the link to this fic?

I'm poking around there and saw a thread you started about wanting to create a database of fanfic links... which is a great idea!  But no one even responded LOL.  I guess they were more interested in posting their fics all in one paragraph without spaces and with characters named Jinefer?

Sadly, that's a pretty accurate description...

And ninety percent of them are from America to top it off....

You would think Americans in their thirties could string a decent sentence together... And write a chapter longer than like five hundred words or something...

I think you have something like it on your site... There used to be one called the "Backstreet Yellowpages" but it was shut down...

You'll also notice I tried to start an award section for stories/authors only on the forum... All the nominations I got were stories on other sites... :D

They also think it's a good idea to start new posts for all their chapters. :D

They amuse me but sometimes I want to hit them all.

The saddest part is that it's turning into a minature LD... Someone will be all like, "Look at what was posted on LD!!!!"

Body of message: Nick is fat. OMGz, is this true?

Funny story about the Bauhaus... Evidently years ago I signed up to be included in their archive and I guess for some reason you needed your first and last name or stupid me just put them down. Anyway one day I was bored and I decided to google myself to see what came up to see if I have anything incriminating in my past that anyone could stumble upon and like ALL my old fics from there came up! They call call it I'm bringing my sexy humps back! Or if they want Greenpeace as a sponsor for their world tour they can call it I want my sexy humpback lol

I don't know, I think they both have a run for their money by Danity Kane and the Pussycat Dolls.... If you ever wanted to see a strip show for an opening act...  there's a good one to watch. ::)

Oh yeah, LD loves those two groups as well.

Aren't they supposed to be BSB fans? Climbing the Wall is so much better.

Ahh, and THAT is the million dollar question.  One would THINK that on a Bsb board, there would be Bsb FANS who would like Bsb SONGS.

But that logic does not seem to apply over at LD.  God forbid you make that argument; you will get SHOT DOWN.

LMFAO!!!!  Maybe Justin could be a singing camel in the music video?  With sexy humps?  And Fergie could ride him through the desert in a bikini. :D   Or it could be a Hunchback of Notre Dame rip-off.

No way! Fans should talk POSITIVELY about the guys on a message board based about THEM? Where's the fun in that? It's better to completely bash them....

Yet these are the SAME girls who the next time BSB comes into town will practically beat you over the head to get closer to these guys that they "love" so much than you.

I think it depends on the venue... You have to do your research beforehand which I failed to do. So I was like Hmm.. Row D? Kick ass! I have 4th row seats. Nahh doesn't work that way...

Yea i don't think there's THAT much difference between 3rd and 1st. When I saw Nick on the Now or Never tour we wound up somewhere between 3rd and 4th rows and I was practically dying, so I'd be happy with that.

Aww yup I was there but I think I was probably one of the only people who didn't get into a soundcheck lol I actually didn't realize how close I would be until we kept getting closer and closer I was off to the side (Where Brian walked up and Howie) but 4 rows in to the side was really really close lol

Actually at Radio City there weren't too many people in the SC. I think there were 30 of us max. I think that was because it was early on in the tour before certain people realized that if they begged security and made nice with the bodyguards they could slip in. I think at RC all the contest winners were the only ones in. My friend won the passes and took me which I was thankful for. It was a really cool experience that I wish wasn't abused, so that everyone could get the chance to experience it.

Oh I know Mare... I know VERY well. Living so close to NYC definitely sucks because of a certain group of fans who tend to go to anything w/the boys in the entire state of NY. I used to really get upset cuz I went through that phase where I wanted to meet the guys really badly and I somewhat suceeded, but it was a frustrating process cuz certain fans just monopolize the guys and then bad mouth them behind their backs. It's just not worth it anymore... I went throuh a phase where I was rubbing elbows w/ a few of them and I just could never get comfortable. I felt like you were constantly having to watch out for the moment you were stabbed in the back. I'm not sure if there is another tour if I'd let myself get so involved.

LOL yup, I know what you mean. I think for some of them it becomes an addiction almost. I am more than content with just being a fan from afar. I have met them all except for Nick because of charity things but even though some of my best friends are the people who would go to great lengths to meet them and talk to them, I stay back and leave them be. I've met Brian, AJ, and I guess you can say I met Nick. I ony have a picture with AJ though. I'd really like my picture with Nick and then I'd just die a happy woman, but it never seems to work out. I dunno if its just me, but Nick always seems pissy when he's in NYC, but then again seeing how some fans treat him I can see why. I've witnessed fans actually say some REALLY hurtful and embarassing things right to his face that were completely innapropriate.

Yup, and scary obssesive. Like I said a few of my very good friends who I love dearly i have openly admitted to them I don't enjoy being around them when the guys are there because they have personality changes. I think they've gotten much better but still, it took all the fun out of it for me and i'd get almost embarassed. And it's funny because Mel I bet we are talking about thae same exact click of fans lmao

Even at the charity events where the guys honestly do make time for everyone but there are always that select few that think they should get more time than everyone else for some reason.

And it's funny because Mel I bet we are talking about thae same exact click of fans lmao

I bet they are! For instance there was this one girl who desperately wanted Nick to sleep with her. I mean it was scary cuz she really was borderline groupie and some of the things she did to get close to him (like hooking up w/ some of Nick's well known friends) just to get close to Nick were like REALLY skanky. And honestly if at that point where she's throing herself at him and nothing is happening he obviously doesn't want her.

I went to the hotel once though and SAW real groupies hanging around. It ws really scary in a way and not something I liked seeing. Let's just say I have plenty of material if I ever wanted to write a fan fic about obsessive fans (which I have considered lol)

Yes! You had to see what happened when Brian showed up at Howie's bowlathan. My goodness people were pushing and shoving all over the place. It was ridiculous! At the golf event I was almost pushed to the floor by a rabid fan from Germany because she didn't get a pciture with AJ and I happened to be standing in her way! lol

Ugh, I believe I know who you're talking about there LOL.  I'm surprised Brian doesn't have a restraining order against her yet.

Even at the charity events? That's really terribly rude. The Boys really have no obligation to any of them at all at a chartiy event.

Oh yea! I've seen like girls in their 20's literally push helpless lil 10 yr olds out of the way to get closer to the guys. Really how much of a threat can a 10 yr old be?

LMFAO Nice pic julie!

There is a scene in UMS that I kind of borrowed from experience that I know two of my "friends" did. There's a scene where Alyssa spends the night in Nick's hotel room and when she comes out the next morning these fan girls are all shooting her dirty looks like she's a whore and whispering crap about her. It was very interesting to take it from Alyssa's perspective.

Depends on the older fan. I think it's more maturity than age and some of the older fans (I'm talking in their forties and up) act like they are fifteen.

They are!!  CF on LD is 50+.  She's like older than my mom.  And she's a crazy Howie teeny... who, unlike real teenies, actually has money so she can go stalk him at all of his charity events.  That's what makes "mature" fans scarier than teenies.

Well, at that point in the story they weren't exactly together yet. The line was a lil blurred with them. The point being though was that Alyssa was already feeling a lil disapointed in herself cuz she in a way let Nick take advantage of her (not that she minded lol) and having those girls stare at her like she was some whore for sleeping w/ her ex b/f (which these girls prolly very much were in the same boat at one point or another) was like the tip of the iceberg for her. It's one of my favorite scenes actually

That's so true! That's why I think fans are getting worse. Their main fan base is now like early to mid 20's and a lot older now with REAL jobs and more money and other resources to go stalk them with LOL

Ok I admit I've made a Thor joke or two in the past, but only in a comical context and NEVER in front of Nick's face of course. Some fans DO take it too far though, I agree. But then again you always have the Brian fans damning the Nick fans to hell for some of the things they say lol. Usually a lot of the stuff is just joking around, but sometimes it IS creepy.

When they get all bent out of shape (epsecially the Howie people) if you want anyone to ask about the album or the other guys. They are always like "Wah wah wah this is a charity event for Howie's family wah wah wah" Well i'm so sure that they would care that much if Howie wasn't in BSB. They are only going to see Howie so stop trying to pretend it doesn't matter that he's a BSB.

I was lucky for the Brian golf thing because I happened to be going down to Nashville on Vacation to begin with. The Howie thing, I did splurge but I loked at it like a mini vacation and my own book release party since my book came out a few days before their CD did. lol

I wonder if the hubbies know about the fanfic writign thing as well? I know no one knows I write fanfic lol

LMAO yes we have moved this to 12 pages lol people will come in, in the morning and be like wow they must have gotten into a very intense debate about realistic fan fiction versus entertaining fanfics lmao

To be fair, it did stem from a very unrealistic fan fic... :D

And we are having an intense debate... Just about the Backstreet fandom.

I think it's better if you're not married. *nod* Then you're just being young with hormones. :D

At least I have an excuse. I'm not getting any so at least I can write about it LOL. But seriously there's not even THAT much sex in my stories.

Well it's not EXACTLY o/t... We're err discussing how we can incoporate crazy obsessed fans into our fan fics thus making them more realistic... Nods

VERY far from it actually LOL Good so I can still talk about it (lol I keed)

But yea... Its creepy. I find the older fans usually have the most explicit stories too. Some of those olde women... Damn can we say desperate housewives? LOl

I know LOL... you've got 50-year-old women writing Nick visuals, and it's like, uh... when you were Nick's age, he was 4 years old.  I'm sorry, but that's weird!!  I've got no problem with people that age being fans, but lusting after them like that kinda weirds me out.

Honestly, I really think they lie about having husbands... Because I would not put up with that if I were a husband.

Well, I know a lot of people keep their fanfiction writing a secret, so... probably not...

I know some normal people who are married and write Bsb fanfics and their husbands know... like Kelly.  She says her husband teases her about it, but she's obviously open about it with him, and he seems cool with it.  He made us that awesome 00Carter pic, didn't he?  That's not weird to me at all; it's her hobby, and she's not out there writing obscene visuals all over the place.

I bought my mom a Johnny Depp PotC dorm shirt I found at K-Mart as a gag gift, and she wears it around the house, but I think my dad would have an issue if she started flying all over to his movie premieres and throwing herself across the red carpet at his feet.  And my dad's a pretty tolerant guy...

We went on vacation and in one of the gift shops you could get a picture of yourself projected onto a background so it looked like you took a pic w/ a celeb. LMAO I should scan that just for laughes.

Do it.

They have sneezing fetishes too!  People write stories about it!  Like visuals, except I'm not sure they actually have sex; the characters just sneeze a lot.

I don't remember what I was Googling to find THAT, but I did one time! :D  Oh, the things you find on the internet... *twitch*

Jeez, I should look into a career in that... I'm always sneezing cause of my allergies, adn I can blow my nose really loud when I want to... I bet there's some kind of career in making videos of yourself sneezing or something...

I watched this episode of "Secret Lives of Women" on the WE channel about chicks who are foot models for guys with foot fetishes... the guys come over to their houses and rub the women's feet all over their faces and stuff...  :-\   Easy job though; all they have to do is paint their toenails and let other people touch their feet.

Purell is a beautiful thing... At least you'll have 3rd graders right? They aren't too bad. It's the kindergartners that you need to watch out for. If i had a dollar for every time I have to remind one of them not to pick their noses or to get their hands out of their pants or not to eat food off the floor.

Then of course there's those moments where they hold your hand and then say Oops! I forgot to wash my hands when i came out of the bathroom!

Yep!  Yay Purell!!  You're right; third graders are better, although I still had one who picked his nose and ate his boogers constantly... or wiped them on the table... or the floor... or my coop. teacher's shoes...   On picture day, it was his turn to go up and get his picture taken, and I watched the kid wipe his snotty nose with his hand and then wipe his hand off all over his shirt, then march over for his picture before anyone could stop him.  I had to turn around so the kids wouldn't see the look on my face LMAO.

As far as germy kids go, I would say just be prepared to be sick a lot your first full year of teaching. Those little things gave me everything under the sun that first year but after awhile you just start building up an immunity to them. LOL

I had a first grader puke ON me when I student taught.

And Nijntje, I doubt your story is the one that was being talked about, especially if you're talking about Prevailing Fate. I think Dee was referring to one she read a really looong time ago and not on the AC site.

OH...   MY...   LORD... you guys!    So I have to just tell you that I logged in this morning and saw that this thread now had 22 pages and I thought ...wow somebody got off on a late night tangent... So then I was like... I'll just read the last page and see if I can jump in and I found this...

okay here are the two pictures lol

Then I was like... Oh lord what have I done now. So then I had to go back and read the whole thread.

LMAO you guys apparently do need a sane role model! However, I don't know that I'm ready to take on that responsibility!

lol I'm just kidding, you guys are sweet. I'll be your queen bee.  :D

But yeah, as far as the marriage thing goes. Yes Josh knows all about my fanfiction. Probably more than he wants to know. He even read the first episode of 00carter and drew us a picture. (he rocks like that) but then he was like please don't make me read any of this stuff ever again. He thinks I'm silly and teases me about it but he also likes that I write. He just wants me to start taking it seriously and write a "real" novel. (which I'm working on...)

As far as sex goes... I've never written an actual sex scene. some PG-13 stuff... but no explicit sex. That's just weird... though, to be fair, I'm just not the type probably wouldn't write a sex scene even if I were single.

LMAO though, I'm not as sane as you think. I did use myself as a character in one of my stories and then hooked up with Brian when my husband was tragically killed. (I told you Welcome To My Heart was crap :D)  I was probably really pissed at him at the time or something  ;) Anyway Josh pouted for like a week when I killed him.

yeah, so since this thread has been off topic for like 23 pages, what's one more post? And seeing gremlin Sammy (who is beautiful even as a gremlin btw)  reminds me that I am done planning my first Supernatural fic and now I just have to star writing it. Everyone be excited with me because it's gonna be fun. It's creepy. and I did lots of research even, and I never do research! (I suck like that)

Yeah... and then I was like, Dang it, Dee, you have to make sure it's not other AC authors you're making fun of!!! :P

I'll go back to the others, but I had to reply to this one first. :P

I read it back when I was like thirteen and it was probably (95% sure here) on the BSBBLVD message board...

Besides, am I honestly mean enough to make fun of people that don't deserve it? No. I'm not.

Oh yeah... and I'll be in there somewhere too, making a look of horrified disgust with a hint of amusement.

Good, I can't wait. ;D

I know realistic is winning in the polls, but I think "entertaining" is really our thing. :D

Just because we want to read and write realistically doesn't mean we have to be realistic. :D

aww I missed the sneezing fetish conversation :( lol and yes I woke up at 7 am this morning!! Gah!!

Don't worry, we'll have another fetish conversation some time... Cross my heart. :)

Oh Ra, I already catch every disease known to man.... *shakes head and thinks about building up an imunity*

Ew.

Considering that I didn't even know about AC until February of 2006, it couldn't have been on it. *nod*

LOL well that's what I thought... if it WAS Nijntje's, I figured it had to be an old story and you wouldn't have known it was hers, obviously.  I'm glad she was just messing with us, though, or I would have felt bad.  I've got no problem poking fun at teenies who aren't around though. :D  (LOL okay, so I'm mean...)

I would have felt bad too, but luckily, it was a joke. Because these days if people wrote really poor stories in their past, they tend to avoid mentioning they wrote them if people bring them up. :D

Well, I always make fun of teenies... I guess I'm mean also. :D

lol that is always my biggest fear when we talk about a story on this forum, that somewhere the author is sitting there reading what people are saying and crying.

Title: Re: Realistic vs. Entertaining
Post by: RokofAges75 on July 13, 2007, 10:23:40 PM
Aww, I know.

But at the same time, if you are the one writing stories where Nick's kidnapper diagnosing his cancer, maybe that should be a wake-up call?  It only came up in the context of realistic vs. entertaining.. . and I bet that story was really entertaining, so if that's what the author was going for, no big deal! :D

Kinda like me with evil twins and dead characters.  I've definitely written my share of ridiculous storylines, so I'm not judging.  Just laughing.  :D

Yes same here. I want to write an evil twin story now! Maybe I won't retire just so I can do that! Or someone who has a sneezing fetish and kidnaps Howie and forces him to sneeze all the time and while he's kinapped his evil twin takes his place with the boys and it's HIS fault that Kevin leaves the group!
